Do you find PH to be a good place to build community.. or do you need to drive it somewhere else?

Building a community on Product Hunt is like hosting a potluck - you can bring the dish, but it's up to the guests to make it a feast! So, let's whip up some engaging content and see who's hungry for innovation here!

@thestarkster Yea that is a solid take - It seems like most of the community lives in the discussions form but I was hoping one day they'd implement a messaging ecosystem (similar to a dating app) if you follow eachother - you can message back and fourth.
It's a mix with LinkedIn, once you can't create groups neither send DMs here

@vitor_seabra how do you typically transfer those community members?
Good to start building it but definitely need to transfer to discord/slack or something else to engage properly and keep it active.
I feel like the PH community isn't what it used to be. I drive it somewhere else to be honest
@jaketital Seconding Jake here.
@jaketital how much so?
Question from a newbie

@jaketital main medium being LinkedIn? or are you more of a threads guy?
@stephane_jauffret the community isn't like what it was back when i started in 2014. There's less depth in conversations and it's more about creating content that directs to an upcoming launch .
@jaketital interesting and probably linked to the sheer volume of people here.
In my case, as a total newbie here, I’m as much interested in promoting my upcoming launch as I am in learning from you guys who seem to operate in similar app building.
I read quite a few books about GTM, product led, marketing, lean management and so forth, but there is no such thing as speaking to people in the same boat as you are. IMO 😉
I believe building community is important and can be achieved with the right tools and approach.
Problem: Difficulty in engaging and growing the PH community.

I think it’s great to start building a community on PH, but if you really want to engage with your members and keep them active, it’s better to transfer it to a dedicated platform like Discord or Slack. For those platforms to be effective, you do need to be active yourself, but it’s easier for the community to interact with each other and contribute.

@jao_japitana totally agree! I do wonder if all the effort on PH could be better used elsewhere as people are on here I would say pre launch and during launch and there is a significant drop off .. that being said there seems to be a ton of folks that love the platform - new products and the mutual help that exists on here.
In my experience, PH is a wonderful place to build community. Forged by its friendly and fun-loving members, it’s easy to see how PH has become a great place for content creators and users alike to come together. Now, that’s not to say that there aren’t other venues out there for doing so, but if you’re looking for a solid start to building and growing your community, then look no further. There’s really no place like PH.

@austinarmstrong I hear that - do you think trying to convert that good will to another medium is a good idea?
PH is the ultimate hub for building a vibrant community, where connections flourish, ideas ignite, and everyone feels valued and inspired!

@baron_swartz do you not feel as though it is self contained? I think there is always a degree of an end goal for business related social media. I think without direct access to users that makes things a little more community focused but not as huge on the brand building side.

I would say – do not be only on one platform because you do not own that platform. PH, LI, Twitter anything. It has helped me a lot to have community calls with those people so there is no gap between us – relational ties are stronger. 🙂

@busmark_w_nika Where else do you typically engage?
I think Product Hunt can be a good starting point to build a community, but it's essential to have additional platforms like Discord or Slack for deeper engagement. It helps to diversify and meet your audience where they are most active.

@elaineluyi I hear that. I am thinking (once we're live) to pivot over to LinkedIn and start hammering that medium but pre-launch it's a little difficult to do as we don't want to drive people anywhere at the moment.

PH is a great solution for creating a community. I consider this 100% fact.
