for me it was with pre-sales. Sign ups in advance are nice, but hard to predict conversion. Real dollars have been the best validation. Hope that helps!

Creating a survey form and asking others to fill might give some idea. Also doing a research in the same domain will work like looking for other companies having similar product, if they have what is their revenue, number of active users on their website , all these can help to understand the market requirements. I would love to know other suggestions.
