I can not leave people or tools or cell phones away. However, I use my ear pods with noise-cancellation functionality to stop all voices. It even stops cell phone rings to come through.
The best way to avoid distractions is to eliminate the source. It's not about training yourself not to get distracted; it's about removing the sources of distraction. So, look for those factors that distract you and find ways to eradicate them.

My phone is the only thing that distracts me, so I simply keep it in my almirah.

Amazing question. I usually have my phone turned off so I don't see notifications from Slack, NYT, iMessages, Whatsapp, the list goes on. I know on the most recent iOS updates there's now a 'Focus' function (Settings > Focus) so you can pick if you want just 'Do Not Disturb' or specific apps to be on, and others off, for 'Work' or 'Sleep'. Still the easiest thing for me is to just turn off the phone 😉 Another big thing is tab management. I use 'Cluster' but there are bunch of different options including OneTab.

@mary_clare_odonnell I saw that iPhone came up with that "Focus" function and I need to use it in the daytime too! I like that. Why am I not turning off my phone more often, another gem I need to use. Thank you for sharing!

Excellent question! I make sure to keep my phone on DND and in the other room. I also make sure to mute notifications on Slack and even exit out of Slack entirely. There is a timer app that I use to stay focused for short increments of times and allow myself space and time to take mental breathers if necessary. During a mental breather I may allow myself time on the phone, check Slacks, tend to my animals or my favorite, take a walk if the weather permits. This usually helps me to stay on task when I return.

@mariah_williamson I like how you have specific systems in place. I am going to try those as well. I feel that you allow yourself to be a real live human by taking walks and caring and spending time with your animals. I need to do more of that. Thank you for sharing :-)

Ooooohhh, this is tough! I try not to work in the same room as a TV (to avoid Netflix binging) and I try to block out time on my calendar so that last minute invites don't sneak in (personal and professional). But it's definitely not easy!!

@its_katka the TVVVVVVVVVV is so distracting, I agree. Ahh and the last minute invites. I try my best to avoid those too. I am going to remember that! Thank you for this.

I use my standing desk when I want to get serious. The motivation to check social media while standing up goes away pretty quickly for me hehe.

Silence notifications, put my phone in another room, listen to lyric-free music in noise-cancelling headphones (and usually pour a big coffee!) I'm also realistic about how long I can do deep work without getting distracted. If I do, that's fine, I go for a quick wander/ stretch, then get back to it.

Nothing, because when I am in deep work only life-death issues distract me :)

Phone on DND & I keep my door closed until its my break or lunch time. Leaving my productive space to go into personal space is very distracting & throws off my momentum.
