bolt.new runs the whole thing in the browser, so you go from prompt to a running app with no local setup at all. It installs npm packages, spins up the dev environment, and lets you deploy in a couple of clicks. For testing an idea fast it is hard to beat, you are looking at a live app in minutes instead of wiring up a project first. The in-browser environment is the standout, nothing to install, just build.

What needs improvement

token usage transparency (8)

Token usage burns faster than you expect on bigger builds, and it is not always clear what a given action will cost before you run it. Clearer, upfront token tracking would make it much easier to plan longer sessions. On larger apps it can also need more guidance to stay on track, but for fast prototyping that is a fair trade.

What impressed me most is its implementation of WebContainer technology to handle Node.js runtimes directly in the browser. It allowed me to scaffold a production-ready Next.js (App Router) and Tailwind CSS architecture—complete with functional Supabase logic—in a single session. For a senior engineer, it’s the ultimate 'force multiplier' that automates the boilerplate and environment setup while maintaining a clean, scalable, and fully editable codebase.

Token usage transparency could be improved, especially when working on large-scale architectures. I’d also like to see more robust multi-file refactoring and deeper support for complex state management (like TanStack Query) when the codebase grows beyond an MVP stage.

I explored several AI coding assistants and low-code IDEs like v0.dev and Replit. While they are great for components, I chose bolt.new because of its full-stack orchestration capabilities. The ability to manage environment variables, install NPM packages, and handle complex Next.js App Router logic in a live browser environment makes it a superior "production-ready" tool for serious founders.

⚠️ I was a paid Pro user on Bolt with a 60 million token plan. I requested to cancel my subscription temporarily, with the intention to use my remaining tokens and possibly resubscribe later. Support confirmed in writing that my token pack would remain available. But after canceling: My token balance was reset to 0 The discussion/chat feature stopped working entirely, showing “Error occurred. Retry” Support stopped replying for several days until I followed up again Even now, my issue is not resolved — I’ve lost access to what I paid for, and the broken UI hasn’t been fixed. On top of that, when you ask Bolt to fix a simple bug or syntax issue, it often rewrites the entire file, breaks your UI/UX structure, and still fails to fix the original problem. It feels like it rewrites excessively just to consume more tokens, which is a terrible user experience. I had high hopes for Bolt, but this kind of support and behavior is unacceptable — especially for paying users. If they fix it, I’ll update this review. But for now, I can’t recommend using it for real work.

Title: Lost 18.6M Tokens – No Resolution for Over 5 Hours Review/Message: I’ve been using Bolt (by StackBlitz) for a while and recently upgraded to a paid plan on June 29. After subscribing, I had 20M tokens, of which I only used 1.4M, leaving me with 18.6M tokens. Unexpectedly, my token balance dropped to 670K, and despite having no prior rollover or usage issues, support has not resolved this for over 5 hours. I’ve submitted screenshots, browser data, and explained the situation clearly, yet no actual fix—only promises that my case is being reviewed. This has blocked me from continuing a critical project with a deadline, and the delay has significantly impacted my productivity and trust in the platform. If I knew this would happen, I would have taken a snapshot of my token balance. I’m sharing this publicly because I believe in transparency—and because private support channels haven’t delivered a solution.

I have encountered several issues with this app: 1. The biggest problem is their customer support, which is almost non-existent. I purchased a pro plan and have been trying to reach out to them for the past two weeks, but no one is responding to my emails or messages in their Discord channel. 2. You cannot add a project to GitHub if you want to collaborate with your team. While I understand that I can create a minimal viable product (MVP) using the app, collaborating with the tech team is crucial, and this is not possible. You can open the project in StackBlitz, but you still cannot push it to Git; the only available option is to create a new Git repository. 3. Most tools nowadays offer a trial period for their pro plans, but this app does not provide that. 4. The AI is suitable for very basic applications, like simple calculators, but when you request changes, it often makes unintended adjustments to other components as well. I believe they have created hype around the ability to develop applications without code because it is a trending topic in the industry. However, I have used other applications that genuinely help in creating apps from low-code to no-code, and this is not one of them.

So I tried to build an EV database. Good understanding and nice schema as far as I can tell. Understood a switch from USD to EUR and from miles to kilometer. Biggest problem was the images. Most were broken and those who were not showed the wrong car. Seems images are picked up from Unsplash without checking their integrity or correctness. And then I run out of free credits. So all in all, same story as with most of these AI tools I'm afraid :) Willingness to pay for this service today: 0

Bolt is great and I've created lots of nearly functional apps with it and many websites. I don't code hence being excited to use this. The tokens are a generous amount but it's unfortunate that they still get consumed when there's errors because solving the errors can take quite a while. I wonder if the "undo" aspect should also undo the tokens used? Just from guessing i'd say 50% of mine were spent on this.
