AMA w/ James & Tim (founders of posthog)

hey! we run posthog, the toolkit for building successful products - a single platform for building products, talking to users and shipping new features. we are 5 years old, have 140k customers and are making multiple $10s of millions of revenue.

no question's too weird. we're super transparent so will probs overshare anyway. plg? fundraising? yc? working with your cofounder? why we publicly document all our bad decisions? our allergy to enterprise sales? we've an open book so ask us anything!

Why should I use PostHog?

While visiting SF recently, I saw @PostHog ads everywhere. Most analytics platforms (like Posthog, @Amplitude, @Mixpanel) seem to have pretty much the same feature sets. So let's get real. What is are the real advantages of Posthog versus others like Amplitude? Nicer/easier to use? Or something deeper than that? A little story: At Product Hunt, we used @Asana. I knew about @Linear. But I didn't feel that switching was worth the cost to migrate the company. Linear and Asana features were largely the same. We finally switched to Linear a couple months ago. And sure enough, I didn't find any new killer features in Linear. But, Linear is just so much nicer to use. So much faster and more pleasant. The result is that a lot of @Slack chaos has shifted over to Linear without me (the CTO) having to beg and hassle folks to use a task tracker more religiously.

Which product analytic tools do you recommend to track user behavior?

As per free tools, I recommend Posthog - Mixpanel. Both of these provide insights into your product usage and user behavior to help you make data-driven decisions and improve your products. 💪Posthog is targeted to roles closer to web development or software related backround. 💪Mixpanel is targeted to less technical backrounds Which tool has helped your business track user behavior and why?

PostHog is a great tool. Not too long ago we used a whole bunch of different tools to achieve the same stuff you can now get directly out of PostHog. I also love the session recording feature to understand user behaviour. In addition PostHog is giving startups a generous amount of credits to use their product. This is really awesome! Thanks PostHog!
