I think this has the potential to become an exciting project that can be used both as a novelty tool for drunk fun and a complementary tool to help you get over writer's block. I have some points though:
[1]- Maybe share your (safe for work) experiences with the AI in your reviews so people can compare their results to yours. I gave two prompts to the software and here are my results:
The first was "I cheated on my boyfriend", and it completed it like this: "I cheated on my boyfriend and I cheated on my boyfriend, I cheated on my boyfriend with a guy and I cheated on my boyfriend with a girl. I tried to cheat on my boyfriend, I tried to cheat on my boyfriend with a guy but-" It ends here. This wasn't a particularly good result, but the last sentence could still be used as a writing prompt. Or the whole paragraph might pass as spoken slam poetry lol.
My second prompt was "My son is gay", and it completed it like this: "She said, "How do you know?" I said, "Because he told me. What do you mean, ‘How do I know?’ He's my son. It's how-" This is a better result in terms of coherence.
[2]- I see some people complaining about getting only 1 free attempt at using it before being required to make a monthly purchase. I agree that 1 attempt at an AI with infinite possibilities isn't enough to decide if you would love it or not. But... The maker needs recognition and hype. So I don't think he's deliberately denying you an extended free trial. I'd like to think that if he could give you more free usage, he would.
The maker has to pay a license fee to OpenAI even for our free attempts at using the software because this is just a front-end (hooked to the GPT-3 API) between us and the OpenAI who owns and hosts the actual AI software (GPT-3). As I understand, OpenAI doesn't care if we're just trying it or abusing it, they charge a fee to third parties (like Virtual Ghost Writer) in either case.
I've been reading a lot about OpenAI but I had no idea how I could ever use it myself. And projects like these make it possible for us to get a taste of what OpenAI is capable of without learning to code. So please be kind to makers who don't have a ton of venture capital backing them.
[3]- The dev made 3 updates to the website based on the feedback provided during the 30 mins I was on this page and he answered everyone's questions immediately. Kudos for that.
So there is potential here with GPT-3. And I got to witness only a sliver of that potential with Virtual Ghost Writer acting as an intermediary. From what I got out of my very limited experience, it's clear that it can be used as a novelty tool to have fun with friends. Can it be used as a serious writer's tool to unleash your creativity? I got the feeling "yes", especially in the very near future. But that's for you to decide with your 3 free attempts, and please share if you ever find out.
