Mainly I do a bunch of user interviews, then I extract the insights and think on the problems to solve, then Im will craft the UI.

1. Study other apps in the same space, specially the ones with bigger budget and larger teams. You can safely assume that they might have done some UX research and in person interviews for the same
2. Use your gut instinct. Do you as a new user, find the UI intuitive
3. Give your UI or App to the target users and just observe them as they use it
4. Create Analytics events in your apps to identify locations where users are not using the app as expected (for example users abandoning the card without checkout or users not completing a wizard etc)

It's essential for UX teams to lead the process from the start, ensuring that user needs and pain areas resolve first. Once a solid UX is established, other teams can start working on it. We call it UX First and it really reduce the rework and bugs.
