@jmj Thank you for your support Jeff! We built Greg so that every action in the app is an act of caring. We think it's an interesting new dimension to the current social media paradigm, since it’s generally accepted that “social is saturated”. Looking forward to seeing what else we learn through this journey of building more cool Greg features!

Hey Product Hunters 👋 (Big thanks to @chrismessina for the hunt! #YouRock) I'm Alex, co-creator of Greg and self-taught plant physicist! 👨‍🚀🍃 You can see my plants and add me as a friend on Greg: https://greg.app/alex. Previously, at Tinder I led the effort to decouple Tinder from Facebook (remember when Tinder was FB signup-only?) and also founded the Growth and Trust & Safety teams. One year ago I brought together some of my favorite teammates from my past experiences to bring you Greg, a simple app for growing plants — and we are reeeally looking forward to your feedback. 🌱 Who is Greg? ⚡ Greg makes having plants as easy as tying your shoes (even if you wear Atoms, you can still grow with Greg! 😜). Greg is a plant coach that offers insights from plant physics and uses machine learning to personalize guidance for growing healthy and happier plants. BTW, today is Greg's 1st Birthday! 🎂 🥳. In one year over 140,000 plants have joined Greg and been watered by 25,000 people 771,000 times 💦 🌱 Why is Greg so smart? 🤓 Plants live and die based on environmental factors that are completely within your control — such as light, temperature, and humidity. The challenge is knowing how to best modify those conditions to help each plant thrive according to its needs. Greg's guidance is rooted in the UN's FAO Penman–Monteith method for modeling plant evapotranspiration. Using original ML models, watering suggestions are adapted to each plant, location, and user. Greg monitors Earth-Sun orbital dynamics and resulting weather fluctuations specific to your location, and then personalizes watering recommendations and insights accordingly. Greg also connects you to a vibrant community of plant lovers and advocates. And as the community grows and activity increases, Greg learns and improves models and understanding, which leads to better advice over time. Why "Greg"? ❤️ Greg is short for gregarious, which means "sociable", but in the science world, "gregarious" also means "plants and animals that live and grow in communities". Who should grow with Greg? 🖖 Plants have been proven to improve mental health, yet a lack in confidence about how to raise and care for plants often inhibits people from adopting these essential companions. Greg wants to change this by empowering people with knowledge (daily insights) and support (i.e. timely reminders) to effectively take care of any and all plant life. How will the world be better if we succeed? 🌎 You'll know when we've accomplished our mission when any human is able to care for (nearly) any plant, and the act of caring for nature has become communal (check out Greg's community!). Gregarious, Inc. is a registered as a Public Benefit Company (PBC). A PBC provides a public good to society beyond merely creating shareholder value. This is at the heart of our (legally binding!) company charter. One more thing 💡 As a special thank you to the Product Hunt community to commemorate our launch and Greg's first birthday, we're offering lifetime Super Greg memberships to anyone that fills out this form within the next week. Thanks for saying hi and we hope you have fun checking out Greg. We'll be here all day to answer your plant questions — and we'd love to see photos of your plant companions in the comments below! 👇 Grow on, Alex and the entire Gregarious team 🌱 P.S. I know plant parents aren't supposed to have favorites, but mine is Dolores, the first plant ever to join Greg. @thomas_rose the # of plants & experience level questions were from our early prototype, us trying to understand who our early adopters were. turns out knowing when to water plants is useful whether you have 1 to many plants & regardless of experience level 🌱. and yes, we definitely have plans for localization and wider metric system coverage... but first we'll build an Android app 💪
Alex Ross
@thomas_rose thank you for trying Greg and for your questions! We do have plants to localize Greg in 2021. We're raising capital now and growing our team. We use the "how many plants do you have?" question during signup to identify the users in the community who are über plant parents with experience growing lots of plants, and to encourage users to add their whole plant family.

@chrismessina @areteross Woohoo Android! I'm assuming it won't have trouble with me logging in on multiple devices? I already have the iPhone version and would hate to have to transfer all [REDACTED] of my plants
Alex Ross
@madtxn definitely, you'll be able to connect your account across platforms to ensure smooth transfer.

As a rehabilitated plant murderer (ok, ok, it was more like plantslaughter! 😅) I can say that my two plants (Captain Plant-It and Prick (who identifies as a 🌵)) are MUCH happier now that I'm working with Greg!
Martin Cisneros
@chrismessina thanks for the support!! i will name my next plant #Hashtag in honor of your hunt 😄

I randomly came across Greg one day when looking up care tips for one of my plants. I thought the name of the app was quite quirky and it reminded me of how I love naming all my plants. Funnily enough, that is something you can do with Greg. Most of my plants have names I thought of, but some are named by the generator that Greg has. Now for the great stuff, with Super Greg (a paid subscription or one off purchase), you can have an unlimited amount of plants in your Oasis. Your Oasis is a bit like a profile page! It will show all your plants in alphabetical order by the name you gave your plants! Greg is also great at identifying plants, but if it cannot, you can correct it or add the information to the species database if it hasn't been added. Greg is great at suggesting when you should water your plants and how much, based on so many factors including soil type, pot type and size, drainage and lighting just to name some. If a plant doesn't need watering, you can snooze it. Another feature I love is the community. You can see when other users water their plants, share experiences with plants you have and when people add new plants to their oasis! It has helped me discover some new plants to acquire and make new friends. This app is well worth getting for Super Greg so that you don't have to put so much thought into when to water all your plants, because if you are like me with over 120 plants in just your bedroom and ensuite alone...it's nice when someone else is there to remind you when a plant needs a good drink!
Alex Ross
@sarahmcrae We love having you as a part of our community! Your plants are gorgeous and you're a fantastic plant parent 😊. Thank you for supporting Greg! 🌱

Hi makers! I’m Darryl, the creator of House Plant Journal and the author of The New Plant Parent. I write about plants using an engineer’s approach and I love helping people uncover the true joys of houseplants: aesthetics, biology, and companionship. I first met Alex and the team behind Greg almost a year ago, and since have had many fun conversations about plant physics (especially light/solar radiation! The cardinal input for plants), the psychology of plant ownership, and the future of living with plants. I’ve loved watching the Greg app grow from a seed to sprout, and am excited it’s being shared on Product Hunt! I highly recommend checking it out.
Alex Ross
@darryltcheng Thank you for your support! We've been such big fans of your approach to plant care since reading your book "The New Plant Parent" years ago. Very happy to have you along on this journey. Big things ahead! 🌱 🚀 Everyone should check out Darryl's plant family, it's awesome: https://greg.app/houseplantjournal/.

Hey alex, I find it really amazing! I like the fact that I tried to build exactly the same, but for some personal reason, I couldn't spend enough time building it. Also, I'm self-taught also! 😝 I like the design, the idea behind it, but yet I haven't tried the functionality. I wish you the best!! I've used many applications and I like none, since most of them didn't really do well the plant care recommendation nor even the suggestions. How have you solved it? How do you verify that the plant I add it's the correct, etc? If it's of your interest, you might find this interesting: https://trefle.io/
Alex Ross
@victor_ribero Wow thank you for commenting, I totally remember when Trefle launched and I shared it with our team! I looove the idea behind it and hope to chat with them sometime. It's awesome you tried building something similar. There's quite a few attempts at this in the plant world, but none have really taken off. I believe it's because the experience needs to be 10X simpler, community-oriented, and heavily rooted in science for it to truly work for a large audience. Try out the functionality! We've gotten the traction we have (over 15,000 people using Greg regularly, super strong week 30 retention even) because they work and are more accurate than anything out there by a mile. We described the way that we trained our machine learning algorithms in the maker comment, and Kiersten from our team commented with more detail. Basically it boils down to: measuring evapotranspiration of a lot of plants twice per day, then training a machine learning model that's "bootstrapped" with physics knowledge from the. UN FAO Penman-Monteith method. We use standard computer vision for plant recognition, and map plant species to our own database of known plant physiologies.
Alex Ross
@victor_ribero I just noticed YOU made ChooseYourPlant!! We totally shared this with our team as well, we were just getting started on Greg when you launched on Product Hunt. We loved your aesthetic and emoji-rich UI. If you ever want to chat I'm alex@greg.app.
Victor Ribero
@areteross oh that's super cool! It looks pretty robust! Make sure I'll give it a try
Victor Ribero
I'll email you! I think it could be great to share ideas and insights. I was thinking to pivot to something else, and I'm sure you have valid points!
Kiersten Rankel
Hi Makers! I’m Kiersten and I work on the science and storytelling side of Greg👩‍🔬 I live in New Orleans, Louisiana with over 200 plants and graduated from Tulane University with my BS/MS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. How we bootstrapped Greg’s intelligence 🧠 Plants need a few key things to survive: water, sunlight, CO2, and nutrients. The only one of those with measurable mass is water (measureable in our homes at least!). Crucially, this means that by monitoring the mass of a plant over time, you can track its precise rate of water loss (evaporation) and gain (watering). Back in 2020, a team of data collectors around the world in seven countries (and both hemispheres!) weighed all their plants twice a day for several months to track their water usage over time. This data was used to create Greg’s initial algorithms which continue to be strengthened as our users care for their plants. Check out one of our data collection setups: https://imgur.com/HSApHaZ One of my favorite parts of the data collection program was getting to see what we’ve called the ‘plant heartbeat’. Here’s an example of my plant Annie’s fluctuations in weight over the course of a month: https://imgur.com/a/pFRD91W 💓 Notice the spikes after watering, and gradual loss of water in the following days. Her basal weight has continued to increase over time as she grows! Be sure to claim our special thank you offer for the Product Hunt community using this form if you haven’t already: https://bit.ly/3szW3V1 I’ll be here all day to answer your plant questions in the comments! Take a look at my houseplants and follow me on Greg: greg.app/kiersten 🌻
