Hey, Product Hunt! 👋

Ever feel like your brain is running an outdated operating system? Midlife Engineering is here to help — no software updates required.

🔊 What is it?
A playful, sound therapy tool that lets you craft ambient soundscapes to relieve stress, sharpen focus, and spark creativity. Think of it as yoga for your ears, minus the awkward stretching.

💡 Why try it?
- De-stress instantly – Ambient sounds lower cortisol, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.
- Sharpen your mind – Creating soundscapes enhances neuroplasticity, keeping your brain adaptable and engaged.
- Enter a flow state – Rhythmic audio patterns improve dopamine regulation, making focus easier.
- Sleep better – Low-frequency sounds slow brainwaves, helping you fall asleep faster.

Backed by science

Studies show that ambient soundscapes improve cognitive function, reduce sensory overload, and enhance focus, especially for neurodivergent individuals. Whether you’re managing ADHD, anxiety, depression or just need to drown out distractions, sound therapy can work wonders.

Midlife (or any life) crisis? Try Midlife Engineering. It’s like therapy without the talking — and way cheaper than a motorcycle. 🚀

Best viewed on Desktop and with headphones.

We’d love your feedback! Let us know not just what you think, but how it makes you feel (the most important part) afterwards. This helps me make it even better.

@mrblackstudio sounds amazing. Makes me really happy to see how much effort and solutions are emerging to help us with anxiety and depression; reasons to be tech-optimist. Congrats on the launch and best of luck distributing this! 🫡

@mrblackstudio
It's a terrific story you told with the site alone; resonates with me every scroll of the way.

A display of creativity with a proven utility case -- restoring one's self. One of the few gems out on the internet.

@ari_nakos Amazing you got the story part. It should feel fun, have humour and yes be relatable to the stresses we all share today — there's a reason why all time poor mental health rates are sky rocketing and we as creatives need to fight against a system that is both causing it and doing very little to combat it.

Appreciate your feedback. Peace :)

Lee Black

@edicook Great to hear Edie — being useful is already a great achievement. I hope it makes you feel good too.

💎 Pixel perfection

It's things like this get me excited about the internet. I'm an audiophile. I like good design. I like when something takes me through a journey. This hits every.single.thing. I've had the noise playing in the background for an hour and played with the synth as my break time (so new sounds), then go back into focus mode.

Really well done @mrblackstudio - my ears, eyes, and soul thank you.

Lee Black

To me it sounds like the perfect tool for the creatively restless - Absolutely genius for people like me w/ a short attention span (just kidding it ain't that short :) )

Quite like the sound of mood-boosting audio designed to get me in the zone.

Could seriously be keen to curb my procrastination!!

Lee Black

@cranqnow Go for it - give it a try and let me know how you feel after a few goes.

Very fun to play, I love the craft put into this, and mixing the sounds is quite satisfying 10/10

Lee Black

@andressul Thanks Andrés — great to hear you had fun. How did it make you feel?

Andrés González
@mrblackstudio I've like 40mins playing it in background, even did meditation with it hehe I feel more calm tbh, and with less anxiety 👌🏼

@mrblackstudio Sure why not, is so creative!

Abesh Thakur

This is incredibly beautifully done. I am usually super against NUXes in product UIs when they forcibly have the user click on buttons with unhelpful hints - but OMG. I refreshed and replayed the page so many times just to read the text and go through 'onboarding'.

Congratulations. This is absolutely amazing.

Just a tiny bit of feedback: Audio on Brave+Windows 11 has quite a lot of artifacts and crackles. Would love a native version if you ever build it!

Lee Black

@abesh_thakur wonderful feedback thanks. The onboarding was needed for two reasons. To help the user understand how to use the synth and then to lock the user into the story — which is important to understand.

Regarding the sound crackling. I don’t have it on Mac. I did have during the build phase but further refined the code override to fix it by adjusting the fade in/out timing.

Again great feedback 🙌

Abesh Thakur

I think you have managed to achieve both perfectly! Well done.

this just took me back to product I was bent on developing to help book lovers read without having to bother about the surrounding noises
Lee Black

Thanks for the positive feedback — had never thought about using it whilst reading books. I could see it working though.

@mrblackstudio yes as an ADHDer, reading while listening to ambient sounds does help a lot, as I can get distracted with even the littlest things. Having surround noise is like a canvas that already has images on it so you can't draw anymore stuff on it, but with ambient sounds it's like a blank canvas that helps draw and enhance any images that the book writers intend to depict with their choice of words.
