Active Recall — Summarize anything, forget nothing

You'll likely forget 90% of the content you consume within a week. Recall summarizes online content, connects it in a knowledge graph and resurfaces it on a schedule tailored to your learning curve, helping you remember the information you care about.

Hi PH community! I’m Paul, co-founder and CEO of Recall. I am an avid content consumer and note-taker who cares deeply about the knowledge I accumulate throughout my lifetime. In fact, I view my knowledge as one of my most precious resources. Despite trying every trending knowledge management tool out there, I consistently found myself spending more time meticulously crafting and categorizing my notes, only to forget about them when I needed them most. Having a background in knowledge graphs, I thought wouldn’t it be awesome if all my notes and the content I consumed was organized into a knowledge graph - resurfacing past content when new related content came up and helping me discover connections that I otherwise would have missed. When my frustration reached an all-time peak, I decided to take matters into my own hands and built my own tool. Recall started off as a side-project that I built for myself. I posted about it on Hacker News nearly two years ago and that was where the whirlwind began. My post trended on HN for over 13 hours, we received funding in less than 24 hours and I quit my job to go all in. That brings us to today! Together with my founding team— Igor and Sanks—we’re on a mission to bring order to content chaos, add intention to the content we consume, and ultimately bring back the joy of learning. The Recall Review is a baby step in our rich product vision. Check it out, and please share your candid feedback.

@akanksha_pillay thank you. Would love to get feedback after you try it.

@miko_markovic11 our big differentiator is that we build a knowledge graph from any of the online content you consume and save to Recall. Whether its a youtube video, blog post or podcasts - Recall can summarize it and find connections with other content that you have saved before. We are currently the only tool that can do this. The other graph based note-taking apps (obsidian, roam, etc) focus on building a knowledge graph from the notes that you take and is a manual effort. While Recall is focussed on the content you consume and creates the links automatically. Here is an example of how you can find connections between new content and past content. I have pinned the timestamp from the video above: https://youtu.be/7jOCYJEdp0g?t=80

@paul_richards1 looks pretty cool, where do you see the product going in the future? I think the tagging can be a very useful tool. More thoughts

@paul_richards1 congrats on the launch! in your knowledge graph, highlighting key info and downplaying the trivial stuff would be super helpful. do you have plans to add features for emphasizing important points while minimizing less relevant details?
Novicto H
@paul_richards1 wow never heard of it before but looks very interesting, I love consuming content, a lot of content, can't wait to try it Paul! Good luck on the launch!

There are so many summarization and bookmarking tools but I haven't seen any that focus on the learning and recall component. Smart.
Paul Richards
@rrhoover thanks Ryan, appreciate it. PS: getting a upvote from you is such an achievement unlocked moment for me.
Esus 🛡️
@rrhoover +1, same here. That's what made me stop scrolling and click 'pricing'. Along with intelligent linking, this might be my new tool for note taking.
Anastasiia Stepko
Testing knowledge makes your product win for me over similar ones! Great job, guys! All the best with the launch and its' results!
Igor Gligorevic
@anastasiia_stepko Thanks Anastasiia!

Congrats on the launch! Can you share more details on how Recall manages to create connections between different types of content?
Paul Richards
@memphys_sk yes, its all based on the connections are all based on the entities (companies, people, places, and other things) that are extracted in the content. For example, if a blog post and a YouTube podcast both mention OpenAI, they'll be connected via an OpenAI node. You can also create connections manually by linking cards directly from the editor.
Arthur Leclercq
I love the concept, how does it work? Do you read articles on the platform or connect them to recall? Congratz for the launch btw!
Igor Gligorevic
@arthur_leclercq Thank you Arthur! Recall can summarize any online content, and you can choose whether you want to save it into your knowledge base, where it connects with the knowledge you previously saved.
Paul Richards
@arthur_leclercq thanks Arthur. You can use our browser extension to add articles and content to your Recall knowledge base or your can just copy and paste the URL into the webapp. Once in the knowledge base, its summarized, categorized and connected with other content. You can then also add the content to your Recall Review, in which case it will generated quiz questions based on the content.
Arthur Leclercq
@igor_gligorevic it looks great, do you have plans to possibly integrate this on phones? Personally, most of the article that I read, I read them on my phone
Igor Gligorevic
@arthur_leclercq We already have a mobile app in beta for both Android and iOS that uses share intent to generate summaries.

Alternative name suggestion: "Total recall" 😏
Paul Richards
@sentry_co I guess you meant "Total Recall"? This was a top contender. I also thought about making the base version Recall and the premium version Total Recall
André J
@paul_richards1 Yes!!! Themed as Hollywood 80s Schwarzenegger action movie style. Would totally win product of the day / week / month. Probably hit the front page of the verge 😂
Ninad Talware
What a great idea with a fascinating backstory! 🔥 'Summarize Anything, Forget Nothing' is a great slogan!! 💯 Best wishes @paul_richards1 and the team. 🚀
Igor Gligorevic
@paul_richards1 @ninad_1607 Thank you! We're glad you like the slogan and appreciate your support. 🚀
Paul Richards
@ninad_1607 Thank you! Glad you like it. We have been through many iterations of our tagline.
Chandula Perera
This is so good! Love that there's an option to test the knowledge with questions. Is there a feature to share the knowledge base? I think that would be cool as well.
Paul Richards
@chandula thank you! Right now you can share a single card at a time. We are working on allowing you to share your entire/sections of your knowledge base.
Igor Gligorevic
@chandula Thank you! We're glad you like the option to test knowledge with questions. Currently, there isn't an option to share the entire knowledge base, but you can share individual cards. However, sharing the whole knowledge base is on our roadmap. We'll also be introducing workspaces so you don't have to share everything from your knowledge graph, just specific workspaces with other users. Additionally, we plan to introduce a feature that will allow you to see how knowledge graphs connect, making it easier to identify common interests with other users.

Recall looks like a game-changing tool for knowledge management! 🤯 The ability to automatically summarize and connect content into a personalized knowledge graph is a brilliant idea. I'm excited to try it out and see how it can help me retain and recall information more effectively.
Paul Richards
@jaredl keen to hear you feedback on the product after you have tried it!
Igor Gligorevic
@jaredl Thank you Jared! We'd love to hear back from you after you try it out.
JaredL
@igor_gligorevic @paul_richards1 I tried the long video summarization feature and it really surprised me. The experience was very good, and there is an outline that allows for direct navigation. Regarding knowledge graphs, I have always hoped for a tool that can automatically tag my saved content. Not only did you achieve this, but you also exceeded expectations in this area. Very impressive! If the UI could be further optimized, I would be very willing to continue using it. You could consider using NextUI. 🫡
Julia Zakharova
Hello to the Active Recall team! Congratulations on the launch! Loved your video) Specially pleased with the kitty!!!! And the dialog with him))))) I visited your site. Your prices are democratic)
Paul Richards
@julia_zakharova2 thank you Julia. Appreciated your feedback.

This looks like a fabulous idea. I was always a fan of Obsidins's note map, so am immediately a huge fan of this. How would recall handle more unusual forms of content such as data visualizations, social media like Reddit, or web3 websites, which often have text in a far less structured format?
Igor Gligorevic
@dan16 Thanks Daniel! Currently, we can't summarize data visualizations yet. Recall already supports structured content, but there are cases where it needs improvement. Enhancing our support for structured content like social media is on our roadmap.
Paul Richards
@dan16 Thanks Daniel. We parse content from a wide variety of content sources like Youtube videos, blogposts, Reddit posts, PDF, news, etc. We do our best to parse the structure on whichever webpage you are on. Right now, it won't work on data visualizations but its something that we could implement in the future with a multi-modal language model.
Daniel S
@paul_richards1 @igor_gligorevic , Thanks for the reply; gotchya, yeah, data visualization could be a very useful addition. Also, as an idea, add an "auto" mode that would save all content you open if you are doing an intense work/study session. Because, as amazing as Active Recall is, I do see how it can be distracting, especially when a user is experiencing "flow" state. As an add-on to this, you can build a fairly simple AI pattern recognition prompt so that if the user forgets to toggle "auto" off and moves on to a different activity, such as watching unrelated YouTube cat memes, Active Recall would pop up asking if you want to continue recording.
Kyrylo Silin
Congrats on the journey and the launch, Paul! Recall sounds like a powerful tool for managing knowledge. I'm curious about the knowledge graph feature. How does it automatically organize notes and content? Can users customize or manually adjust the connections in the graph?
Igor Gligorevic
@kyrylosilin Thanks Kyrylo. Categorization is based on content type, and connections are made through entity extraction. For example, if a blog post and a YouTube podcast both mention OpenAI, they'll be connected via an OpenAI node. You can also create connections manually by linking cards directly from the editor.
Rob Hallam
Congrats on the launch team! With AI catching up, we need every advantage we can get 👏
